WHAT IS HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY?

Written by RP-X | Oct 21, 2022 9:30:00 AM

You may have heard of Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy (HBOT) in medical or sporting circles but are unsure as to exactly what it is and how it is helpful. In this article we’re going to look in depth at Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, how it is delivered and what the benefits of the approach are.

It is now available for uses beyond the medical, and evidence shows it is a very effective wellness therapy.

Read on to learn more…

WHAT IS HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment that involves breathing in oxygen in a specially designed chamber under conditions greater than atmospheric pressure. Sessions last around 60 minutes and benefits are wide ranging, including reduced inflammation, faster wound healing, improved cognitive performance, enhanced sleep and general relaxation.

Medical HBOT treatment is approved for the following medical conditions, with researchers campaigning for more to be added…

  • Air or Gas Embolism

  • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

  • Gas Gangrene

  • Compartment Syndrome/Crush Injury/Other Traumatic Ischaemia

  • Decompression Sickness (Bends)

  • Arterial Insufficiencies

  • Severe Anaemia

  • Intracranial Abscess

  • Necrotising Soft Tissue Infection

  • Osteomyelitis (Refractory)

  • Delayed Radiation Injury (Soft Tissue and Bony Necrosis)

  • Compromised Grafts and Flaps

  • Acute Thermal Burn Injury

  • Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY ISN'T NEW

According to history, the first use of HBOT was by a man named Dr Henshaw in 1662. He believed high pressure air could be used to treat certain conditions. Further research continued over the centuries, and in 1940’s HBOT was approved for its most famous use - treatment for divers suffering from the bends.

Since then, the technology has been developed further, leading to the wide number of uses the approach has today.

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY FOR GENERAL WELLNESS

There are non-medical uses for HBOT too – you don’t need to be suffering from a recognised medical condition in order to benefit from this relaxing and effective therapy.

Research into the efficacy of HBOT when it comes to exercise recovery was revealing. The therapy not only enhanced speed of recovery from exercise, but also made a marked difference to general activity, mood, walking ability, sleep, normal work, and enjoyment of life.

There’s also proven benefits on performance. Now of course these will help from a sporting performance standpoint, but the same benefits will crossover into everyday life, leading to improved energy levels and fatigue resistance.

HOW CAN I ENJOY HBOT?

At RP-X we deliver Hyperbaric oxygen therapy via a device called an Airpod. This is a non-medical device that increases oxygen concentration by up to 35%.

The Airpod is a pressurised environment, meaning oxygen molecules become smaller and their concentration in the blood increases. As the molecules are delivered under higher pressure, they can reach peripheral areas, speeding wound healing and energy production.

Airpods can combine oxygen with molecular hydrogen in our patented Airpod Hydroxy system, to create something we call Hydroxy therapy. This is a powerful antioxidant, neutralising free radicals and creating a healthy cell environment.
